Naira Marley’s trial for internet fraud faces delays as police fail to bring him to court

In another unexpected turn of events, the trial of Nigerian singer Azeez Fashola, widely known as Naira Marley, for alleged internet fraud has been rescheduled to a later date.

The trial, brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on 11-count charges related to conspiracy and credit card fraud, was adjourned to November 13, 2023. The delay was caused by the Police’s failure to bring the defendant to court, despite a production warrant issued by the judge.

During the previous hearing on October 6, 2023, Naira Marley’s defense counsel, Olalekan Ojo, SAN, explained the defendant’s absence, stating that he was detained by the Police for questioning regarding the murder of Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, also known as Mohbad. Ojo requested an adjournment, which was granted by Justice Oweibo.

In response, prosecution counsel Bilkisu Buhari requested the issuance of a production warrant to ensure the defendant’s presence at the next hearing. The judge granted this request and scheduled the trial to continue on October 30, 2023.

However, on the scheduled date, Naira Marley was once again absent from the court. Buhari informed the court that, despite serving the Police with the production warrant, the defendant was not brought to court. She requested a further adjournment to follow up with the Police to secure the defendant’s presence.

As a result, the case has been adjourned to November 13 and 30, 2023, for the continuation of the trial.
