A dismissed police corporal in Lagos State has been apprehended by the police for allegedly impersonating a serving inspector. The suspect, a 35-year-old resident of Sango Ota in Ogun, was arrested on June 4 at Gaskiya College Road Junction, Ijora-Badiya, while riding an unregistered motorcycle.

According to SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson, a police stop-and-search team stopped the suspect and questioned him about his presence on a major road, which was prohibited for motorcycle riders. The suspect claimed to be a police inspector and presented a police identification card with his name, photograph, and the rank of an inspector.

Following the arrest, a court order was obtained to search the suspect’s residence in Sango Ota, which was executed on June 8. The search yielded several items, including a pair of uniform with a sergeant rank, an operational jacket with the inscription ‘SARS LAS SCORPION,’ a pair of camouflage with an inspector rank, and a jacket with the inscription ‘Special Forces.’

Additionally, the police recovered a police belt, a pair of police boots, a camouflage tee-shirt, a police beret with crest, and an unsewn blue uniform. Investigation revealed that the suspect had been utilizing these uniforms since his dismissal from the police force in 2017.

Preliminary findings also indicated that the suspect had been altering his rank to match the promotions received by his former colleagues still in service. Hundeyin informed NAN that the suspect would face charges once the investigation was concluded.
