A 43-year-old truck driver, Kingsley Opara, found himself facing charges of manslaughter and dangerous driving in the Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrate’s Court due to a tragic incident that occurred on September 16, 2023.

The incident unfolded along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos State and resulted in the loss of a life and substantial vehicle damage.

Opara, a resident of No. 5, Samuel Otusile Street, Iba, Ojo, Lagos State, was brought before the court after allegedly driving recklessly, leading to significant harm. Inspector Olatunde Kehinde, the police prosecutor, outlined the charges against Opara.

According to Kehinde, Opara was operating a Mack Truck with license plate T-13537LA when he caused damage to a Toyota Dyna mini truck bearing Registration No AKD 108XY, driven by Mukaila Aliyu. Regrettably, Opara’s reckless driving on that fateful day resulted in the death of Deputy Corps Road Marshal Abiodun Ajomole, aged 35, who was assigned to Road Safety Corp 2, point 116 Costain Unit Command Lagos State.

The charges brought against Opara are in violation of Sections 51 (i) and 52 of the road traffic law and regulations of Lagos State 2018.

In response to the charges, Opara entered a plea of not guilty.

As a result, Chief Magistrate Mrs. Folashade Kayode granted the defendant bail in the amount of N1 million, with a requirement for two responsible sureties who meet specific criteria.

One surety must hold a civil service position on Grade Level 16, and the other should be a recognized community leader.

The case is set for mention on October 28, 2023.
