What to Avoid for Fresh Breath: Here are five foods, drinks linked to bad breath

Do you know that the foods and drinks you consume can significantly impact the freshness of your breath? In fact, over 80% of bad breath cases are rooted in dietary choices. Being mindful of what you eat and drink can help keep your breath smelling pleasant. Here are some culprits that may cause your breath to be less than fresh:

1▪︎Canned fish or sardines

Canned fish, including tuna and sardines, can lead to bad breath. The process of storing seafood in dark, metallic cans can accelerate decomposition, resulting in an unpleasant change in smell and taste. Fish contains trimethylamines, which tend to linger in the mouth and emit an undesirable odor.

2▪︎Citrus fruits

While citrus fruits like tangerines, oranges, and lemons are delicious and nutritious, they can promote bad breath. Odor-causing bacteria thrive in acidic environments, and consuming a lot of citrus can contribute to this. People experiencing acid reflux may find the situation worsened, as acids can rise into the throat and cause smelly breath.

3▪︎Milk

Milk is beneficial for the body, but it may not be as kind to your breath. Natural bacteria on your tongue can consume amino acids present in milk and cheese, leading to bad breath.

4▪︎Coffee

Coffee offers many benefits, but it can also cause dryness in the mouth, leading to reduced saliva production. A dry mouth provides an ideal environment for foul-smelling bacteria to flourish. To counteract this effect, consider drinking a glass of water for each cup of coffee, which helps dissolve stinky substances and keeps your mouth hydrated.

5▪︎Onions and garlic

Garlic and onions are delicious additions to many dishes, but their strong flavors come with a downside. After consumption, garlic is absorbed into the bloodstream, leading to a second wave of odor that exits through the breath. Onions, too, continue to emit a smell even after consumption, thanks to sulfuric compounds entering your system. Regularly brushing, flossing, and rinsing your mouth can help eliminate the remnants of these pungent foods.

Being aware of the impact of these foods and drinks on your breath can help you maintain a fresh and pleasant oral environment. Remember to practice good oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing, and staying hydrated, to minimize the effects of these potential offenders.
