A female officer of the Nigerian Air Force, identified as George, reportedly took her own life at her residence in Ikeja, Lagos State. She was a Master Warrant Officer stationed at 651 Base Services Group Resident in Sam Ethnan Air Force Base Ikeja. Her body has been removed to facilitate a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

According to a military communication obtained by SaharaReporters, it stated, “Master Warrant Officer George, a female personnel of the Nigerian Air Force serving at 651 Base Services Group Resident in Sam Ethnan Air Force Base Ikeja, was reported to have committed suicide inside her room at about 1400hrs on June 10, 2023. The 3 Air Provost is currently making efforts to transfer her to 661NAFH, while further investigations will be conducted.”

“I want to bring this to your attention. My fellow countrymen, depression is a real issue. Please do not let the challenges of Nigeria push you to an untimely demise.”

Meanwhile, reports indicate that in 2022, a total of 79 individuals died by suicide in Nigeria, comprising 70 males and 9 females. It is important to note that these figures do not include unreported cases of suicide.

The breakdown reveals that Lagos had the highest number of suicide cases with 12, followed by Oyo with 10. Kano had four cases, while Anambra, Edo, Delta, Ogun, and Rivers had three cases each. Borno, Bayelsa, Abia, Benue, FCT, Imo, Enugu, Niger, Jos, Jigawa, Kaduna, and Kwara recorded two cases each. Additionally, Ondo, Osun, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Gombe, Cross-River, Kogi, Adamawa, Ekiti, Bauchi, and Yobe had one case each.

It was also reported that on May 19, Major U.J Undianyede, a former Battalion Commanding Officer who led the fight against Boko Haram in the North East, tragically took his own life. This occurred less than 72 hours before the court-martial’s verdict on alleged military infractions during the war.
