President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken the decision to suspend the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from his position with immediate effect.

As reported by Channels TV, Willie Bassey, the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, issued a statement on Friday, June 9, 2023, confirming this development. The decision to suspend Mr. Emefiele comes in the midst of an ongoing investigation into his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the Nigerian economy.

In the statement, Bassey stated, “Mr. Emefiele has been instructed to promptly hand over the responsibilities of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will assume the role of Acting Central Bank Governor until the investigation and reforms are concluded.”
