In a harrowing incident on August 24, criminal assailants targeted a team of dedicated police officers in the Isiokolo division of the Delta State Police Command. This attack left the officers traumatized and one officer in critical condition with his left arm amputated.

ASP Obasanya Samuel, ASP Robinson Irobo, and PC Chukwudi Abanu were the officers who faced this terrifying ordeal. The assailants struck at approximately 8 pm while the officers were conducting a routine stop-and-search operation outside the Isiokolo police station.

Tragically, ASP Obasanya lost his life during the attack. He was carrying a rifle that was stolen by the criminals. ASP Irobo, on the other hand, was shot in the left arm but managed to escape into the police station with a smoke pistol.

The aftermath of the attack has been deeply distressing for ASP Irobo. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital for immediate medical attention, where it was discovered that he had lost a significant amount of blood, necessitating four pints of blood transfusions. The gunshot had inflicted severe damage to his left arm, ultimately leading to its amputation. The medical bill resulting from his treatment exceeded N1.2 million.

A source familiar with the situation described the dire circumstances, stating, “He was rushed to the hospital almost lifeless after losing lots of blood, so the hospital swung into action without following normal protocol, simply to save his life. The only remedy available was to amputate his left arm where he was shot. Irobo has been in the care of the hospital since August 24 when the incident occurred and he currently has a bill of over N1.2 million to pay.”

The officer’s family has been grappling with the challenge of covering the substantial hospital bill, relying on the kindness of well-wishers to support ASP Irobo’s recovery.

The attackers, it was revealed, were on a mission to steal firearms. They assaulted the three police officers during their routine stop-and-search operation, resulting in the tragic loss of ASP Obasanya’s life, severe injuries to ASP Irobo, and a life forever changed by the loss of a limb.
